Saliva and Dry Mouth

Many of us take saliva for granted because we are unaware of how important it is for our well-being.  For that reason we should all become informed on the benefits and functions of saliva.

Why is saliva so important?  This type of question is often asked in where most of the times there’s no answer for.  Well, that thing we call saliva that’s found in your mouth is produced in the salivary glands and is made up of approximately 98% water. Salivary glands are groups of cells called acini that conceal a fluid that contains water, electrolytes, enzymes, and mucus.

Saliva is your bodies own natural protection that will help guard you against tooth decay amongst other things while flushing bacteria and food away.  This oral defense system helps lubricate the tongue, teeth, and tissues in the mouth that are found to be delicate.  Through its process it also helps neutralize harmful acids that in turn could deteriorate your teeth.  Neutralizing these acids will help restore normal pH levels that are necessary for a healthy mouth.

To sum it all up!

Importance of Saliva

  • Protects teeth form decay by neutralizing damaging acids
  • Prevents infections by shielding bacterial growth on tissue
  • Helps digest food and aids in chewing and swallowing
  • Keeps mouth moist for normal speaking ability

Lack of Saliva? The lack of saliva can lead to negative things!  Not only will you suffer from Dry Mouth but also, mineral imbalance, higher risk of caries, and acid-producing bacteria.

Here is a list of symptoms of Dry Mouth.

  • Trouble chewing and swallowing food
  • Unquenchable thirst and difficulty speaking
  • Cracked lips and dry tough tongue
  • Altered sense of taste and texture of food

Make sure to keep your mouth moist and remember not to take saliva for granted and learn to value it as it is essential for our well-being.

Diabetes and Dry Mouth

Diabetes is marked by high levels of sugar in the blood and can be life-threatening if not taken care of.  Those who suffer from this have to deal with the lack of ability their body has to properly use sugar.  Consequently, a good healthy diet is always recommended in where you should monitor carbohydrates because they can highly affect your blood sugar.  Also, managing your blood sugar on a daily basis can help monitor the blood levels of glucose.

Many people are unaware of the link between diabetes and dry mouth.  As a result, in addition to taking care of your diabetes and making sure you are eating the right things, you should also maintain good oral hygiene since diabetes may lower your resistance to disease.  Most often, if you are suffering from diabetes you might see a change in your saliva.  If the saliva you would normally produce is reduced you may find yourself suffering from dry mouth.

Dry Mouth should not be ignored and should be taken care of right away since it can lead to other health problems.   Most of us do not acknowledge the importance of saliva and we tend to take it for granted.  If you find yourself suffering from dry mouth look for a mouthwash that can help you mimic the role of saliva in a natural way.
